Stand Firm: Finding Courage in a Shaken World

“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” — Joshua 1:9

The Weight of the Headlines

Every day the news cycle feels heavier: violence erupting in cities, voices clashing online, families divided at the dinner table. For many, fear has become the background noise of daily life.

But here’s the truth: fear is not our inheritance. Courage is. God did not call us to hide in the shadows—He called us to stand firm in His Word, even when the ground shakes.

Stories of Courage

That’s why I write books like The Turn Around and Lessons in Silence. They aren’t just stories—they’re mirrors of our world, showing what happens when brokenness meets grace, and when fear is met with resolve.

  • In The Turn Around, the characters face devastating choices, but God’s grace opens a way forward.
  • In Lessons in Silence, Charlotte learns that even in the darkest corners, the voice of truth can still whisper hope.

Fiction, yes. But also reminders that courage doesn’t mean we aren’t afraid—it means we act in faith anyway. The truth is that our own lives are also stories being written. Each of us will face chapters of uncertainty, pages of sorrow, and moments when fear feels louder than faith. But just like the characters on the page, we have a choice: to let fear define our ending, or to let Christ write a greater story through us.

Courage often looks small: a whispered prayer when you don’t know what else to say, choosing kindness when anger would be easier, opening your Bible when scrolling through headlines feels more natural. These moments might not make the news, but they matter. They shape the atmosphere of our homes, our churches, and our communities.

God has always used ordinary people in extraordinary ways. He isn’t asking for perfection—He’s asking for obedience. When we stand firm in Him, even trembling, His strength carries us further than we ever could on our own.

A Call for the Church

Now more than ever, the Church must rise with courage. Not the loud, angry kind that mimics the world’s shouting—but the steady, unshakable courage that looks like:

  • Praying in public when others mock.
  • Teaching children the Word in a culture that dismisses it.
  • Speaking truth with grace, even when it costs us.
  • Choosing faithfulness over comfort.

The world needs to see Christians who stand—not because we’re fearless, but because we know Who stands with us. The world needs to see Christians who stand—not because we’re fearless, but because we know Who stands with us.

And here’s the challenge: it’s time for our churches to step outside their walls. Faith was never meant to stay hidden inside four pew-lined walls. Jesus called us to be salt and light, and light does its best work in the dark.

So let’s stop hiding. Let’s stop playing it safe. Let’s be churches that:

  • Host prayer walks through our neighborhoods.
  • Feed the hungry and sit with the lonely.
  • Share the Gospel boldly in schools, parks, and workplaces.
  • Live as though Christ’s return is near—because it is.

When a community sees a church moving with compassion and courage, it can’t be ignored. Hope spreads. Lives change. Light shines.

Now is not the time to shrink back. Now is the time to let His light blaze in our streets, in our homes, and in every place darkness thinks it has won.

“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.” — Matthew 5:14

Courage in Practice: A Challenge

This week, I challenge you to take one bold step of faith.

  • Pray with someone outside your home.
  • Share your testimony, even briefly.
  • Post a verse instead of joining an argument online.
  • Begin the 84-Day Devotional from The Turn Around as a daily act of courage to anchor your days in Scripture.

Small steps, done faithfully, build unshakable courage.

The Writer’s Lantern Podcast: Courage Conversations

On September 27, The Writer’s Lantern Podcast will launch, and our very first episodes will lean into this very theme: courage. We’ll talk about what it looks like to create, to speak, and to live as people of light in a world that feels dark.

If you’ve ever wondered how to hold on to faith when fear is everywhere, these episodes are for you.

Closing Word

The ground may shake, the headlines may roar, but God’s command remains: “Be strong and courageous.”

And we don’t walk into that command alone—He walks it with us.

Pull up a chair. Let the lantern light remind you: courage is closer than you think.

A Prayer for a Healing Nation and Church

Heavenly Father,

We come before You as a broken people in need of Your healing. Our nation is weary from division, anger, and fear. Our communities ache under the weight of violence, uncertainty, and hopelessness. Lord, we ask You to pour out Your mercy and bring peace where there is strife.

Heal our land, O God. Restore compassion where hatred has taken root. Give our leaders wisdom, humility, and the courage to choose justice and truth.

And Lord, heal Your Church. Forgive us for the times we’ve hidden our light instead of shining it boldly. Stir us up to action—not in anger, but in love. Make us a people known for grace, generosity, and faithfulness. Let revival begin in our homes, spread through our congregations, and ripple into every community.

Help us to be strong and courageous, not in our own strength, but in Yours. Let us be Your hands and feet in a hurting world.

In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
